Discord Mobile Update

By: Autumn

Discord updates come out all the time. One of the most recent and influential updates that has come out is the new mobile app UI. Originally, the Discord mobile app was made to mirror the desktop version, but on a much smaller scale. This made some things inaccessible for mobile users, making them use a web browser version on their mobile device or simply give up on changing specific settings that were unavailable on the app. Many users complained about this inconvenience, causing Discord to take action and create the new mobile app UI, letting mobile users have a unique UI look that didn’t mirror the desktop. The new UI also made many more settings accessible. However, many users argued this update was annoying and useless. Older users claimed to have lost their years of muscle memory to navigate around the old UI.

Now that the UI is different, there are many new things. One of these new features is the servers tab. The servers tab contains every server you’re currently in, all organized neatly in their own category. In the new layout, the servers tab is located in the bottom-left corner of the app, sitting on the navigation bar. Originally, the servers and your DMs were on the same list. With this new UI, the servers got their own unique tab which made for easier navigation and a lot less confusion for new users who may have had trouble with the old UI.

With the new UI, users can now favorite channels. This applies in servers along with DMs. Favoriting a channel keeps it pinned at the top of all of your channels. Many users find this very helpful for pinning specific channels in servers they want to check back to frequently. Others find it helpful for keeping specific group DMs (GDMs) or just solo DMs with friends and other groups. This has helped many users that want to keep their friends at the top of their DMs list, instead of having them go down upon messaging other people. This makes it much more accessible and easier for users to message their friends and group chats.

Along with the ability to favorite channels and DMs, users can also search for any content shared in a server or a DM with friends. This feature makes for easier navigation for users. You can search through all of the messages and content shared within a server or DM by using the search bar. Users are able to use the search bar to search for all content and messages in a server or DM, which makes for easier navigation.

With the new navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, there are now new tabs, including a messages tab. All of your DMs and GDMs are in their own dedicated messages tab, instead of at the top of your servers where they were previously placed. The new messages tab makes getting to your DMs and GDMs much simpler. Along with the new messages tab, there are even more new features in the messages tab aside from favoriting DMs. There is now the activity bar, or active now bar, at the top, just above your messages. You can easily see what your friends are up to at the top of the messages tab in the active now bar. This makes it so you can scroll through and see what games your friends are playing.

Since there is the new navigation bar and tabs, there is a new notifications tab. All of your notifications go to this tab. Discord has simplified all of your notifications to emphasize the things you can find in the Notifications tab, like friend requests and @ mentions. This has made it simpler to view your notifications, instead of having to search through the entire app. However, many older users complain about this feature, too, as they aren’t used to it.

In the new You tab, there are plenty of things to cover. The first is the new location of the friends list. It is now placed in the You tab, underneath your own profile. If you press on the new rectangular button, it will bring you to your friends list.  If you want to view your existing friends, your pending friend requests, or add new friends, you can click the button in the You tab. You can also accept or deny friend requests in this tab and the notification tab. This is a big difference from where it originally was, being much closer and related to your DMs than it is now.

The second thing to cover in the You tab is the new settings. There are many new settings that previously were only available on the desktop version of Discord. With these new settings now available to mobile users, it makes Discord easier to personalize. However, when the update first came out, many users had trouble finding the settings on the new UI. To find the settings on the new mobile app UI, you can access them by tapping on the new gear icon located on the top right of the You tab. You can also double tap your profile picture on the navigation bar, which usually leads to the You tab, but instead it will open the settings. The shortcuts to open the settings make it very easy to access and the new options in the settings, which make it so users that use the mobile app have an easier time managing their settings and personalizing their experience. You can also search for settings once in the tab.

There are also changes in the voice and video calls. Now, instead of immediately joining the call when you tap the voice channel, it brings up a menu where you can preview multiple things before joining the call. Some of these things are the voice channel’s chat, the option to join muted or unmuted, and basic information such as the participants of the call and the voice channel’s name. However, more things have changed. When you swipe up, it will open the voice channel’s chat rather than the settings of the call. You can also view all of this information within the voice call, which even gained its own new look.

The last major thing is the new swipe to reply feature. This new feature has had many users complaining since it was released. Originally, swiping right in a text channel would bring up the server or (G)DMs members. Now, swiping right allows you to reply to a message. Users argue that this feature erases much more of their muscle memory while using the platform and is simply useless. Many users have requested Discord to add a feature in settings to turn swipe to reply, or even the new UI as a whole, off. Doing so would be very satisfactory for tons of users, which may ultimately happen as Discord has added a similar feature to their experiments.

The newly released Discord mobile UI update has caused a lot of havoc among users, however many people have stopped arguing and are now focusing on adjusting to the update. It doesn’t seem like anything about the new mobile app will change anytime soon, aside from a few new experimental features here and there that are added to both the mobile and desktop apps. Ultimately, in the opinion of many users, the update isn’t horrible and brought many new features as well as a new look to Discord, yet a lot of people still need time to adjust to the new update.

Game Updating is Getting Worse

Sawyer Murray

Updates screw with modded games until the modders are able to update their mods. What this sentence is saying is that when a game updates it kid of messes up the functions of the game and it's just absolutely unplayable. Using mods when a game has to update is annoying because once the game is updated the mods are trying to recover to the game.

Gaming burnout can involve emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by playing video games. Gamers can suffer from playing games constantly. Gaming has been getting worse with people not leaving their house for long periods of time. People gaming constantly ruins your eyes and it just hurts your relationships with family and friends.

Playing games takes up quite a lot of time and that time could also be spent doing other things. People have started taking gaming to an extreme where they will sit at the screen for hours on hours and refuse to do anything with their lives. Their rooms become the dirtiest thing on the planet and they let their body slowly get ruined by gaming.

And behold, instead of being able to play it right away, I have to get some ridiculous 35 GB "UPDATE". People have been getting mad that when they buy a game it's playable for a while and then the game starts to update constantly.

In conclusion, when games force you to update it can take a really long time and if you had a long day, coming home to an update is annoying. Game updating is really annoying.

On Electricity By Eli M. Sherman Introduction First off, this is an information article about electricity and not 100% true. The further back I go, the more variations I get of the story. Most of this is as accurate as I could get and I did my best not to be biased. This is about three very important people in the realm of electricity: Thales of Greece, Ben Franklin, and Nikola Tesla. I did spend a lot of time on this. Remember, this is history and it does have a few flaws. Let's begin in 600 BC. Section 1: Greek scientist One of the first noted experiments with electricity was in 600 BC (BCE). Thales of Miletus, one of the legendary seven Wiseman in the ancient world, found out that if you rubbed silk on amber it would create a weird sort of charge that was later dubbed as static electricity. Not many people will acknowledge what he did and there's a lot of controversy because there are no records left of his experiments. One thing remains true, though, he did discover static electricity, and his experiments were only the start of something even greater. Section 2 Ben Franklin 1774 Ben Franklin was a great man. He was a proclaimed genius, interested in the way things work, and a great inventor. He invented a lot of the simple things we use to this day, such as the lightning rod, a glass form of the piano, flippers for feet and hands, and an electrostatic generator. Two of his most famous inventions are bifocals and the Franklin stove. Electricity was a very fascinating subject for him. He loved lightning, which is probably why he decided to do the famous kite experiment. A book that gives a lot of insight on Ben's life is Ben and me. It is fictional due to the factor of the Mouse, but the inventions and the ideas are true. Yes, he really did get a bunch of glass jars and hook up his lightning rod to them. Even though electricity was very dangerous, he was willing to take the risk for the pursuit of science. Section 3 Nikola Tesla. 1890 Warning: I might be a bit biased on Nikola Tesla because he is my hero. He is from Croatia and he was a man ahead of his time. He formed the ideas for everything we have today, such as wireless communication, alternating current electricity, and worldwide communication. He first worked under Thomas Edison. Tesla created the alternating current system, but Edison said it was too dangerous because it was so high voltage. Tesla thought that it could work, so he left Edison.

When Tesla's projects began becoming successful, it caught the attention of the Hoover Dam project. The Hoover Dam project was, well, building a dam called Hoover. They were going to turn it into the world's largest hydroelectric dam. Nikola Tesla wanted the contract so that he could send his alternating current all over the U.S, but Edison wanted it so that he could destroy Tesla and his alternating current. That started the war of the currents. It was a time where Edison did whatever he could to make sure that Tesla didn't get the contract. It started out with boastings of how dangerous high voltage was. Then it escalated to Edison paying kids to give him their pets so he could electrocute them to death. That ended when he decided to electrocute a baby elephant named Topsy.

During this time, Tesla was trying to keep his reputation even though all he wanted to do was further the career of science. In order to preserve alternating current, he invented the Tesla coil. It used his alternating current system to shoot out actual lightning bolts. To prove that it was safe, he touched them with his bare hands. Edison was infuriated by this, so he created the cruelest thing known to man, the electric chair. He made a chair that would fry a man alive. He could now discredit and destroy Nikola Tesla, but all that is known is that Edison killed a man by electricity. Nikola Tesla won the contract and now, to this very day, the Hoover Dam is still running with his alternating current generators. I conclude this article with a few more words. These three men did what was right by pursuing science, especially in the realm of electricity. They were persecuted and discredited multiple times, all because they were doing what scientists should: pursue technology and evolution instead of just gaining money for selfish reasons.
